Well, there is only smoke, but these bugs have a hard time eating what they can't see. And they also don't seem to like the smoke very much. The one closest shakes it's head and skitters over to one side trying to avoid it.
Of course, 'skitters' might not be the word for something that makes a solid 'thud' everytime one of its legs hits the floor.
