He's not even looking when the first alien fires. But, you know, the weapon the ugly's carrying? Might as well be a blaster. And what, exactly, does the training drone fire? Blaster bolts. The alien's not nearly as fast as the drone. As soon as the sound is in the air the 'saber is up and the first round of fire gets parried. By the time Ray realizes what he's just done there's more incoming fire, of course- but he's never had to make the parrying count more, so he's not going to bother thinking about it. He's just gonna throw himself into the fray full-bore.
